Tottenham Hotspur has officially announced the signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig on an initial loan deal until the conclusion of the current season.
In pursuit of additional attacking options for the latter part of the 2023/24 campaign, Spurs swiftly finalized the acquisition of Werner after initiating talks last week. Although Manchester United had expressed interest in Werner earlier in the winter, they opted not to pursue the deal. Consequently, the German forward has now joined Tottenham, with the agreement reportedly featuring an optional purchase clause valued between £13 million and £17 million.
Interestingly, Tottenham’s initial link with Werner dates back to 2015 when he was with Stuttgart. However, at that time, the club opted to pursue Son Heung-min, who remains a key figure and the current first-team captain.

Werner’s journey includes a successful stint with Leipzig from 2016 to 2020, establishing himself as one of Europe’s promising forwards. Following a move to the Premier League with Chelsea, where he contributed to their Champions League triumph, Werner returned to Leipzig on a permanent basis for the 2022/23 season. Despite being well-liked among players and fans, his performances at Stamford Bridge fell short of expectations. Over the last year-and-a-half, he has scored 18 goals in 54 club games but lost his starting spot to Belgian international Lois Openda.
Now, with his move to Tottenham, Werner aims to bolster his chances of earning a spot in Germany’s squad for Euro 2024, which will be held on home soil. He could make his debut for Spurs on Sunday in their upcoming match against Manchester United.
