Pep Guardiola acknowledges his team’s fondness for performing under pressure as they prepare to take on Real Madrid in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie.
City clinched their inaugural Champions League title last season, securing a historic treble that included winning the Premier League and lifting the FA Cup for the second time under Guardiola.

However, before eyeing domestic success, City must overcome Real Madrid, 14-time Champions League winners, at the Etihad Stadium in the quarter-final second leg. Guardiola is confident in his players’ ability to handle the pressure.
“They surprised us in the first leg with their player positions, and we need to assess,” Guardiola stated. “Carlo Ancelotti, with his experience, might alter tactics, and we need to be ready. But we must also assert ourselves and apply pressure.”
Guardiola emphasized his players’ affinity for pressure situations, stating, “They thrive when stakes are high, when it’s do or die. While it’s not a guarantee of success, I’m confident they’ll fight till the end because I know them well, I see their determination in pre-game meetings and preparations.”
Regarding their chances in the Premier League, Guardiola remained cautious, saying, “I’m not making any predictions. We’ll compete, that’s certain.”
City’s encounter with Madrid adds another chapter to their intense rivalry in recent Champions League campaigns. While Madrid emerged victorious in a tense semi-final clash in 2021/22, City exacted revenge last season with a resounding 4-0 victory at home.
Although City holds a strong position with goals from Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, and Josko Gvardiol, they remain wary of Madrid’s ability to cause upsets both home and away.
