Manchester City and Liverpool remain resolute in their pursuit of Florian Wirtz, despite the ongoing interest from Bayern Munich.

Wirtz made a successful comeback from an ACL injury at the beginning of 2023, and his outstanding form this season has played a pivotal role in Bayer Leverkusen’s current lead in the Bundesliga as they vie for their inaugural title.

Operating from the ‘number 10’ position, the 20-year-old has notched three goals and provided five assists in 13 Bundesliga appearances. Additionally, he has contributed to eight goals in six games across the Europa League and DFB-Pokal.

While Leverkusen has already stated their intention to keep key players during the upcoming January transfer window, Wirtz is anticipated to stay with the club into the 2024/25 season. His father and agent, Hans-Joachim, confirmed this stance to Sky Sport Germany, stating, “Currently, everything is geared towards Florian continuing to play in Leverkusen next season.”

Although a potential transfer is more likely in 2025, with a preference for staying in Germany, Manchester City and Liverpool are not willing to concede the race for Wirtz. Both clubs remain ardent admirers of the talented young attacker and are committed to challenging Bayern Munich for his signature.

City had been tracking Wirtz before his injury in 2022, and their interest resumed after his return to the pitch earlier this year. Despite competition from Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United, as well as previous links to Barcelona, City and Liverpool are determined to compete for Wirtz’s services. The recent scouting presence of City at Leverkusen’s match against Hoffenheim, where Wirtz scored, underscores their continued interest, with midfielder Exequiel Palacios also catching their eye during recent months.
