Erik ten Hag hasn’t dismissed the possibility of Anthony Martial extending his stay at Manchester United beyond the current season, revealing ongoing discussions with the striker regarding his contract.
Martial’s existing agreement is set to conclude at the end of the season, but it includes a standard option for another 12 months until the summer of 2025, a detail often included in the club’s contracts.
While it was initially thought that United might not exercise their option on Martial, given his struggles with fitness and form, Ten Hag has now indicated that there is a potential for a different outcome. Similar talks are also underway with Raphael Varane, and discussions have led to the activation of contract extensions for Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, and Hannibal.

“We are talking with Rapha Varane and with Anthony Martial. We triggered the options on Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, and Hannibal,” Ten Hag stated during a Thursday afternoon media briefing ahead of United’s FA Cup third-round match against Wigan Athletic.
Martial, who has scored twice in 19 appearances this season, often coming off the bench, has not been a consistent starter. Despite being injury-free this season, he missed the last five games due to illness.
In the press conference, Ten Hag was also questioned about the recent report suggesting that Jadon Sancho might be nearing a return to Borussia Dortmund before the January transfer window closes. However, the Dutchman refrained from providing any clarity on the matter, stating, “I can’t say anything about that. We have to wait and see how things are going. When we have news, we will tell you.”
