The speculation gained momentum after Barcelona’s current head coach, Xavi, announced on Saturday that he would step down at the end of the season.

This decision followed a 5-3 defeat at home to Villarreal, where Barcelona conceded twice in added time at the Nou Camp.

The loss has left them trailing LaLiga leaders Girona by 11 points. Arteta, 41, took over as Arsenal manager in November 2019, succeeding Unai Emery and stepping into a senior managerial role for the first time in his career.
