Barcelona is actively pursuing a potentially groundbreaking new kit deal that could nearly double the worth of their current contract with Nike, their longstanding partners, according to reports.

Nike has been the manufacturer of Barcelona kits since 1998, establishing a significant partnership in the sports world. However, the existing contract, inked in 2016, is set to conclude in 2028, and there are emerging indications that a renewal might not transpire.

This situation has prompted Barcelona to explore alternative options to optimize their revenue stream, particularly in light of apparent cost-cutting measures by Nike. Amid job losses within the company and star players endorsing rival brands, such as Harry Kane and Jack Grealish, Barcelona is reportedly in negotiations with Puma. The talks could potentially lead to a deal valued at a guaranteed €200 million (£171 million) per season, with the possibility of reaching up to €300 million (£257 million) annually if certain add-ons are met.

Barcelona’s current Nike deal yields €105 million (£90 million) each season, in contrast to Real Madrid’s €120 million (£103 million) from their agreement with adidas.

Additionally, there have been reports suggesting Danish firm Hummel and New Balance as alternative options for Barcelona. President Joan Laporta has even hinted at the prospect of the club producing and selling its own kits, although this route is unconventional for elite clubs due to the lucrative nature of partnerships with established brands.

Laporta has expressed concerns about Nike’s commitment to the club, accusing them of breaching the contract. He stated, “We have some concerns and a situation that is not what we wanted. The operation has been deteriorating; we think they have breached the contract. We are talking to Nike. In times of difficulty, they have not shown themselves. In words, yes. When we have shown our teeth, they have made the effort, but it is not enough. It is at this point that we want to find the best solution. There are three options: continue with them, accept what the market gives us, or do it ourselves through BLM [Barca Licensing & Merchandising].”
