“I even claimed I was going to change my name at one point,” he said. I wanted to do rid of the word ‘Edochie’ so that people would think of me as Yul, a Theatre Arts graduate looking to establish a name for himself. I had to start from the ground up and create my own name. I believe I have accomplished this by God’s grace.

I am no longer known as Pete Edochie’s son; instead, I am known as Yul Edochie. In Nollywood, I have thrived and continue to excel.”

Judy Austin, the movie star who was recently in the news for reportedly impregnating a coworker, also indicated that after completing his secondary education, he had the option of doing something other than acting or filmmaking because he did not want to be in his father’s shadow.

“When I first started university in 1998, I had the option of doing something else or studying any other topic because my father was already successful in the film industry,” he explained. I had the choice of taking any other course, but I chose this one because I would be under my father’s protection. However, I chose to major in Theatre Arts. Following that, I began hustling, and my journey began in Enugu.

I used to take night buses from Enugu to Lagos for auditions that didn’t work out. But when things didn’t work out, I wasn’t upset because things didn’t work out; instead, I was grateful that I had the opportunity to be there in the first place. My father was and still is a major player in the industry. He’d made a name for himself, but I wasn’t about to live under his protection. I wanted to come up with my own moniker. As a result, I allowed myself some time.”
