Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has hinted at a potential move to the Premier League in the future, shedding light on why he turned down an opportunity to join Liverpool this summer.
Despite the rise of Alonso’s Leverkusen, who are on the verge of clinching the Bundesliga title, the manager was heavily linked with both Liverpool and Bayern Munich. However, he publicly confirmed his intention to remain with his current club for at least another 12 months.
While an immediate move to England is not in the cards, Alonso has not ruled out the possibility of managing in the Premier League down the line.

“You never know,” teased Alonso. “At the moment, I have enough on my plate to think about, but I’m still young as a coach, and the Premier League is certainly an appealing prospect.”
Having turned down Liverpool and Bayern, both of whom are set to appoint new managers this summer, Alonso’s future is now potentially linked to another former club, Real Madrid, who may require a new boss next summer if Carlo Ancelotti departs.
Alonso further explained that he felt a strong attachment to the Leverkusen project, which influenced his decision to stay rather than take charge of Liverpool this summer.
“There were numerous factors [in my decision to stay],” he stated. “After just one year, we are in the process of building a team and fostering a great team spirit here at Leverkusen.
“There were many considerations, including the players involved. The season has been exceptional so far, and we aim to continue this journey together.
“I felt deeply connected to it all. After just one year, it didn’t feel like the right moment to leave, and that’s why I’m fully committed.”
