Wigan Athletic fire Toure after his unsuccessful managerial debut – Report

After a catastrophic 59 days in charge of Wigan Athletic, Kolo Toure has been fired.

The former defender for Arsenal and Manchester City had only signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Wigan on November 29th, but his reign was short-lived because the squad lost all nine of its games while he was in charge.

Only two points were earned by the Latics in Toure’s seven league games, which put them at the bottom of the standings and four points from safety.

More pressure was placed on Toure as a result of Wigan’s poor performance, which also caused them to be eliminated from the FA Cup by Luton Town following a replay. The 41-year-old has previously served as an assistant coach for the Ivory Coast national team, Celtic, and Leicester, but this was his first management position.

Wigan is now searching for its fifth permanent manager in the previous three years following Toure’s sacking. Malachy Brannigan, the chief executive of Wigan, said: “Unfortunately, the results on the pitch have not been as we would have expected. As difficult as this decision was, the board thought that it was necessary to offer us the best chance of remaining a Championship club next season.

“With the immediate goal of staying in the second division for next season, we will now work promptly and effectively to ensure the right person is selected as the next permanent manager of Wigan Athletic.”
