Former Super Eagles head coach, José Peseiro, has shared the reasons behind his departure from the team.
Peseiro stepped down from his role in February after his contract expired. The Portuguese coach had been appointed on May 15, 2022, to lead the three-time African champions.
At 64, Peseiro guided the Super Eagles to a second-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Côte d’Ivoire earlier this year. However, he revealed that he would have resigned even if the team had won the tournament.

“I had already decided that after AFCON, I would leave. I put in a lot of effort, but the stress was overwhelming. My family and the players supported me, but I reached a point of exhaustion. Even if we had won, I would have left,” Peseiro told SABC.
Reflecting on his tenure, the former coach of Saudi Arabia and Venezuela described his experience with the Super Eagles as rewarding.
“Nigeria was an incredible job with very talented players. We performed excellently in AFCON, and I believe we were the best team until we lost to Côte d’Ivoire,” Peseiro added.
