Although that is still the case, Kai Havertz’s header in the second half has helped them go closer to some of the clubs above them, namely Fulham and Liverpool, both of whom suffered losses this past weekend.

Even though they are not at their best yet, a clean sheet on Benoit Badiashile’s debut will be viewed as a huge plus.

Speaking after the game, Potter opined that given Chelsea’s current situation, they were never expected to play “sensational” football and were instead happy to earn three points.

We are pleased with the three points today, the Englishman told BBC Sport. Overall, we did fairly well; they had their moments as well, but the goal today was to win and take three important points off of a team that was also pressing hard.

“We strive to play well, and I believe that at times we did. However, you have to realize the circumstances in which we find ourselves, so the game won’t always be exciting. The boys put forth a lot of effort.

Potter was inevitably questioned about the £88 million purchase of Mudryk from Shakhtar Donetsk, and he anticipates that the winger will rapidly win over the audience.

“He is a young player with tremendous ability in the last third,” he continued. He is quick and direct, and I believe the audience will enjoy him.

The teams are now tied for first place in the table with the same number of points, and Chelsea’s next game is against Liverpool at Anfield on January 21.
