In a goal-filled match at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja, the Super Falcons of Nigeria showcased their dominance by securing an emphatic 5-0 victory over Cape Verde in the first leg of the second round of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations qualification.
The Super Falcons entered the WAFCON qualifiers on Thursday, November 30, missing key players Asisat Oshoala and Jennifer Echegini due to fitness issues. However, this did not hinder the eleven-time Women’s Africa Cup of Nations winners as they asserted their superiority over Cape Verde.
Uchenna Kanu, currently playing as a forward for Racing Louisville in the United States, initiated the scoring for the Super Falcons in the 7th minute. Gift Monday extended their lead in the 25th minute, and Kanu added a third goal before the halftime whistle.

The second half witnessed Esther Okoronkwo contributing to the onslaught, scoring the Super Falcons’ fourth goal in the 66th minute. Less than 11 minutes later, she netted again, making it 5-0 and securing a resounding victory in the first leg of the 2024 WAFCON qualifiers.
The Super Falcons will now travel to the Santiago-Estadio Nacional Blue Shark in Praia, Cape Verde’s capital, for the return leg on Tuesday, December 5. A draw in that match would be sufficient to secure the Super Falcons’ place in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, hosted in Morocco next year.
