Orlando Julius, a legendary Nigerian highlife musician, has died. He died on Thursday night at the age of 79, according to his family.

“Yes, my husband passed away late last night, there was no indication that death was approaching, he was not ill, he merely slept and died in his sleep,” his widow, Latoya Ekemode, told NAN.

Femi Kuti, an Afrobeat musician, confirmed the news by posting a photo of the deceased on social media.

“Just heard of the passing of Mr Orlando Julius, RIP Sir, condolences to his family, praying for strength and comfort for his family at this difficult time.

“He was a great musician and great saxophonist,” Femi Kuti wrote.
