New Leicester City manager Ruud van Nistelrooy has opened up about his departure from Manchester United, revealing that he had a conversation with Red Devils boss Ruben Amorim before parting ways with the club last month.
Van Nistelrooy, who was appointed interim manager after Erik ten Hag’s exit, expressed his disappointment and hurt at being let go by United. “When I took over as interim manager, I said I was here to help United, and I meant it. So, I was disappointed, very much so, and it hurts that I had to leave,” he explained.
The Dutchman emphasized his strong connection with the club and its supporters, admitting that the only assistant manager role he would have considered was at United. “The only job I would have taken as an assistant manager was at United because of the bond I have with the people in the club and the fans,” he shared.

However, Van Nistelrooy also expressed understanding for Amorimโs decision, acknowledging the challenges of managing a club. “In the end, I understood the new managerโs position. Iโm a manager myself, and I can see how a situation like mine could impact things,” he said.
Van Nistelrooy praised Amorim for taking the time to speak with him about his departure, saying, “I spoke to Ruben about it, and Iโm grateful for that conversation: man to man, person to person, manager to manager. That helped me a lot to move on and quickly shift my focus to new possibilities, which really lifted my spirits.”
