Ebafor, 25, and Alex, 36, both died under inexplicable circumstances at the same hospital in Igarra, Edo State, in what appeared to be an instance of a money ritual gone bad.
According to a witness, “Ebafor [surname withheld] was drinking with his aunty at 9 p.m. on Monday night when he suddenly started shouting, ‘Ah! money, money, money, money, money, money Alex, you’re a lousy buddy, a lousy friend.’
“He began behaving erratically, so they attempted to calm him down, but he began vomiting blood, and he was sent to the hospital as a result.

They arrived at the hospital about 10 p.m., and as the doctor was performing preliminary checks, he began shouting Alex’s name across the hospital; they questioned if the Alex he was referring to was the one who poisoned him.
“On the other hand, it was reported that Alex [surname withheld] was in the middle of his own incantations when he called his wife, who sells fruits near Afekhai Junction in Igarra, and told her not to come home after the day’s sale. His wife, on the other hand, did not comprehend what her husband meant and returned home after the sales to find her husband stretching and babbling incoherently.”
She summoned neighbors, who assisted in rushing him to the same hospital where Ebafor was being treated. The two men began acting the same manner at the hospital, and they both died in less than five minutes.
When his wife returned home to get a cloth to cover him, she discovered fire and a coffin on the floor of their room. There were also other charms scattered on the floor when Ebafor’s room was investigated.
