Trent Alexander-Arnold emphasizes his full understanding of England manager Gareth Southgate’s past decisions to limit his playing time on the national team, despite his prominent role with one of the top club teams in the country. Despite his notable contributions to Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold faced challenges securing a spot in England’s starting XI, playing only 33 minutes during the recent FIFA World Cup in 2022.
While he eventually featured as a central midfielder in the latter part of 2023, Alexander-Arnold, in an interview with FourFourTwo, acknowledged the timing factor in team selection and expressed understanding towards Southgate’s choices.
“In a different era and different generation, I’d have played much more for my country. However, I’m a firm believer in my own ability, what I bring to a team, and what I can do on a football pitch. I still believe I’ve got a big role to play with England,” said Alexander-Arnold.

Acknowledging the necessity of managerial decisions, he added, “I’ll never throw my toys out of the pram. I feel like I’ve enjoyed the good side of it at club level, as someone who knows he’s going to play most games and has that trust in the manager.”
Regardless of the news, Alexander-Arnold maintains a rational perspective, recognizing the challenges faced by managers in making decisions with numerous options available. He concludes, “I’ll never hold it against a manager for making that decision.”
