Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has expressed doubts about the club’s acquisition of Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna.
Yorke is skeptical about the £36.5 million deal for the Dutch forward, who joined Manchester United this summer. Although the 23-year-old Zirkzee had an impressive season with Bologna, scoring 12 goals and providing seven assists, he only made two substitute appearances for the Netherlands in Euro 2024, where they lost 2-1 to England in the semi-final.
Yorke views this as a ‘red flag,’ questioning why Zirkzee is not a regular starter for his national team. He commented to the Manchester Evening News, “You have to ask why he is not a starter for Holland. That’s a red flag for me when you come in at United for that sort of fee.”

Yorke criticized Manchester United’s recent transfer strategy, suggesting that the club should be targeting the best players available rather than settling for less prominent names. He added, “United should be signing the very best players from Holland and other top national teams. The fact that they are not concerns me.”
While Yorke acknowledged Zirkzee’s potential, he remains unsure about the striker’s ability to succeed in the Premier League without a more substantial international track record.
