President Bola Tinubu has resolved the outstanding payments owed by the Federal Government to the Super Eagles and various other national sports teams. According to a statement from Tinubu’s Media Centre, the N12 billion payment covers 15 months of salaries for senior national team coaches, allowances, and commitments owed to the senior national teams, female teams, and the Under-20 national team.

The statement reads, “President @officialABAT has approved the payment of N12 billion outstanding backlog for Nigeria’s National teams of various sports, which includes Super Eagles and others. The payment entails the clearing of the senior national team coach salaries running up to 15 months, payments of allowances and promises due to the senior national teams, females, and Under-20 national team. This is coming at a time when the Super Eagles of Nigeria are preparing to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations, which is billed to start later this month.”

In 2020, the Super Eagles raised concerns that the Federal Government had not released the approved N1.5 billion for their participation in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, where they finished third behind Algeria and Senegal. To address the financial shortfall, funds intended for the Super Falcons and the Flying Eagles had to be redirected by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
