An eyewitness close to the scene, only going by Bassey, stated, “On Sunday night, one of the shops caught fire. We were in a nearby bar when all of a sudden there was a loud noise that sounded like thunder, and the entire area was quickly covered in thick smoke.

“We then hurried outside and attempted to put out the fire with sand and anything else that was nearby, but it was unabated and kept spreading to other stores. We persisted in trying, but the fire fought against us.

We fought the fire for about thirty minutes, but as it got worse, half of the stores and residential buildings had already completely collapsed.

While we were still fighting, state fire department personnel stormed the scene. Enraged youths stoned them and fled with their truck. The firefighters’ car was wrecked during the pursuit, but they were still able to get away with it.
