Bayern Munich is considering an immediate termination of head coach Thomas Tuchel if the team fails to advance past Lazio in the Champions League’s last 16. Tuchel’s departure at the end of the season has already been confirmed following a disappointing stretch that left the club trailing ten points behind Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga title race.

The Champions League struggles escalated when Bayern suffered a 1-0 defeat to Lazio in the first leg of the last-16 tie last month. There’s a looming risk of elimination unless they can overturn this deficit in the upcoming return leg on Tuesday. Sky in Germany reports that a failure to progress may prompt Bayern to terminate Tuchel’s contract immediately.

While advancing to the next round could secure Tuchel’s position until the season’s end, an elimination is deemed ‘likely’ to result in contract termination. Concerns have grown among club officials regarding the team’s performances, and there’s apprehension about Tuchel’s commitment since his departure was confirmed.

With Bayern currently on a run of just one win in their last four Bundesliga games, sitting ten points behind Bayer Leverkusen with ten matches left, club chiefs had hoped Tuchel would guide the team until the season’s end. However, fears persist that further damage could occur without a change in leadership.

Although former Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is open to an interim role, Bayern has not yet identified a preferred candidate to take over from Tuchel in the short term.
