Nigeria Legend Finidi George Compares Current Super Eagles Squad to 1994 Golden Set
Nigerian football legend and current Super Eagles coach Finidi George has shared his thoughts on how his current players measure up to the iconic 1994 golden set.
Speaking during an interactive session with the media at Eko Hotels, Lagos on May 23rd, Finidi George compared the current crop of Super Eagles players to the revered 1994 squad, expressing optimism about their potential to surpass the achievements of their predecessors.

“This squad… this present Super Eagles squad. They can even do better. They are getting there,” he remarked. “If you see that 1994 squad, it was a squad that came through 1988, 1990, 1992, before 1994.”
Reflecting on the recent performance of the team, especially their silver medal finish in the 2023 AFCON final, Finidi George emphasized the importance of aiming for gold in future tournaments to change the narrative.
“We’d try and push them so that the next outing would be gold. We’re capable of winning the gold medal; I think the narratives would change,” he asserted.
The former Enyimba coach expressed his satisfaction in coaching players like Victor Osimhen and conveyed his readiness to work with the team to achieve significant milestones.
“We’re not Superman; the quality that these players have today, I think they can break all records. I’m glad that I’m the coach now, and I want to work with them and see how we can achieve that,” he added.
Comparing the current Super Eagles squad to the illustrious 1994 set, while acknowledging the rich legacy of players like Jay Jay Okocha, Kanu Nwankwo, and Rashidi Yekini, Finidi George highlighted the talents of current stars such as Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, Victor Boniface, and Nathan Tella.
While the 1994 set had a distinctive style and notable achievements including winning the AFCON and Olympic gold, Finidi George believes that with the current squad’s potential and recent performance, the future looks promising, provided they qualify for the 2026 World Cup and secure victory in the next AFCON edition in Morocco.
