After spending a week in Abu Dhabi, the Super Eagles of Nigeria arrived in Lagos late on Tuesday, January 9, in preparation for the 2023 AFCON.
The team initiated their 2023 African Cup of Nations campaign in Abu Dhabi on January 2, engaging in two warm-up matches before the tournament. In the first match, the Eagles secured a remarkable 12-0 victory against a local club in Abu Dhabi, with Victor Osimhen, the team’s talisman, contributing two goals.
Despite the initial excitement over the team’s strong form, they faced disappointment when they lost 2-0 to Guinea, a fellow 2023 AFCON participant, in their second warm-up game on January 8.

Following the defeat, the Super Eagles flew to Lagos a day later, landing at the state’s international airport around 9 p.m. local time. Despite the setback, the team received a warm reception from the Nigerian football supporters club, who joyously welcomed them with drumming and cheers.
Coach Jose Peseiro and his team are set to spend the night in Nigeria before departing for Abidjan, the capital city of the host country, Ivory Coast, on January 10. The Super Eagles will kick off their Group A campaign against Equatorial Guinea on January 14.
