Southampton manager Russell Martin has played down the likelihood of director of football Jason Wilcox leaving the club amid interest from Manchester United.
Despite United’s offer of 12 months’ salary in compensation, Southampton has rejected the approach. Wilcox reportedly tendered his resignation to Southampton in hopes of facilitating a move to Old Trafford.
Southampton is said to be disappointed not just by the compensation amount offered but also by the timing of United’s approach. Martin’s team is currently engaged in a promotion battle to the Premier League but suffered a significant setback with a late 3-2 defeat to title contenders Ipswich Town. Consequently, Martin was not inclined to discuss Wilcox’s future after the match.

“I’ve been hearing rumors about his departure in the media for six weeks, and nothing has changed,” Martin commented. “I spoke with Jason this morning, we had a game, and I’m here to discuss the game, not Jason.”
“I’m sure the club will provide updates when appropriate, or I will. Right now, I’m disappointed about the result, and that’s what I want to focus on.”
It’s reported that Southampton granted United permission to speak with Wilcox after indicating they would require substantial compensation. However, United’s offer of 12 months’ salary fell short of Southampton’s expectations.
United is believed to have initially agreed to increase their offer before submitting it, arguing that it was fair given Wilcox’s recent arrival at Southampton last summer.
Currently, Southampton is unwilling to entertain United’s offer, meaning Wilcox would have to serve a 12-month notice period before potentially joining Old Trafford.
