The Premier League has confirmed its commitment to continue using Video Assistant Referee (VAR) in the upcoming season, despite calls from some clubs to abolish the technology. The decision was unanimously supported by all 20 member clubs at the Annual General Meeting.
Acknowledging the need for improvements, the Premier League has outlined six key areas for enhancement:

– Implementing semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) to reduce delays
– Enhancing fan experience through fewer interruptions and better communication
– Enhancing VAR officials’ training for greater consistency
– Increasing transparency in VAR decisions
– Launching a fan and stakeholder communication campaign about VAR

A significant change includes the introduction of SAOT, which utilizes optical player tracking to swiftly and consistently determine offside positions. This technology aims to enhance broadcast graphics and the overall experience for both stadium attendees and viewers. SAOT is slated for implementation in autumn 2024 alongside the existing VAR system.
Furthermore, efforts will focus on improving VAR officials’ training to ensure speed without compromising accuracy. Enhanced transparency initiatives, such as expanded communications from the Premier League Match Centre and features like “Match Officials Mic’d Up,” aim to provide greater insight into VAR decision-making and improve the fan experience.
