The FA has officially announced the removal of replays from the first round of the FA Cup onwards.
The expansion of UEFA competitions such as the Champions League has prompted the FA to reassess its calendar, aiming to safeguard player welfare and maintain the quality of domestic cup competitions.
Beginning from next season and continuing for at least six years, the revamped format will feature several notable changes. Fixtures will exclusively take place on weekends rather than midweek, and both the fourth and fifth rounds will be scheduled separately from Premier League fixtures to prevent fixture congestion or the accumulation of games in hand.

Additionally, the Premier League has increased its annual funding to the football pyramid by £33 million, benefiting clubs across both the men’s and women’s systems.
FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham emphasized the significance of securing a robust format for the Emirates FA Cup, which contributes significantly to the FA’s revenue and investment in football development. He highlighted the agreement’s aim to preserve and enhance the Cup’s allure while accommodating the demands of the modern football calendar. The extended summer period also facilitates a much-needed player break before the commencement of the next season.
Furthermore, Bullingham underscored the importance of grassroots football, disability football, and the women’s and girls’ game, with the additional financial support from the Premier League demonstrating a shared commitment to nurturing football at all levels.
