The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has designated Lekki in Lagos as a cybercrime hotspot (EFCC).
Wilson Uwujaren, a spokesman for the EFCC, made the announcement today.

This, according to Uwujaren, was based on data from the Lagos Command’s investigation efforts in the second quarter of 2021.
The Advance Fee Fraud and Cyber Crime Sections of the Command made a total of 402 internet-related fraud arrests between April and June 2021.
243 arrests were made by the Advance Fee Fraud Section, while 18 sting operations were conducted by the Cyber Crime Section, resulting in 159 arrests and 13 convictions.
70 of the 159 individuals arrested by the Cyber Crime Section were from Lekki, including Ajah, Badore, Victoria Garden City (VGC), Sangotedo, and Oniru, according to the agency.
There were 24 suspects in Ajah, and 14 and 13 in Oniru and Sangotedo, respectively. Badore has a total of eight suspects.
“64 percent of those detained are participating in a romantic scam, followed by “Middle Man Scam” and “Picking,” which account for 8% and 7% of those arrested, respectively.
“The 64 percent who participated in the dating fraud received N8, 310,000; $349,290 USD; £900; €10, and Cryptocurrency 0.17513,” Uwujaren said.
