The Transmission Company of Nigeria has affirmed a report by The PUNCH that stated that a shortage of gas was the reason behind the poor power supply that electricity users nationwide were experiencing.
In a statement released on Thursday, the TCN confirmed that gas constraints to the power generating companies had resulted in a progressive reduction in the amount of power generation available to the grid.
The amount of bulk power that is available on the grid for subsequent transmission to electricity distribution companies across the country has been impacted, according to the TCN.

Since December 2023, Nigerians have been complaining about the inadequate power supply.
Distribution companies have persisted in voicing their opinions, claiming that since they too receive a meager allocation from generating companies, they are not at fault.

Similar to the DisCos, the TCN revealed that it could only transmit what was generated and that the load allocated to the distribution load centers had decreased.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has announced that there has been a gradual decrease in available generation into the grid due to gas constraints to the thermal generating companies. This has affected the quantity of bulk power available on the transmission grid for onward transmission to the distribution load centers nationwide. The announcement was made by TCN General Manager, Public Affairs, Ndidi Mbah.
Mbah disclosed that the TCN was collaborating with other electricity industry players to maintain the grid.
Despite the current low power generated into the system, TCN is working with stakeholders in the power sector to do everything within its power to ensure that the grid remains intact.
Because TCN can only transmit what is generated, the load distributed to the distribution load centers has also decreased as a result of the current load on the grid, the speaker added.
As gas improves to the power available thermal plants, TCN “is committed to ensuring a gradual increase in electricity supply to load centers,” according to a company spokesperson.
“We are working with the value chain stakeholders to ensure that supply through distribution companies to electricity consumers nationwide improves,” she begged.
As previously reported by our correspondent, the nation’s gas-fired grids were receiving insufficient gas supplies, which resulted in low allocation to electricity distribution companies.
