Super Eagles striker Ademola Lookman has criticized the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for not implementing Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers, according to OwnGoalNigeria. Lookman voiced his frustration after two of his legitimate goals were disallowed due to what he believes were human errors.
The Atalanta forward expressed his anger following Nigeria’s 1-0 victory over Libya, during which his goal was ruled offside, despite replays indicating he was onside. This incident followed a similar situation in a previous match against Benin Republic, where another of his goals was controversially disallowed.
“Twice now, I’ve been denied a good goal. Why isn’t VAR used in key games like this?” Lookman questioned, expressing his frustration over the absence of the technology in crucial matches.

CAF has a selective policy for VAR, using it only in certain stages of AFCON, club tournaments, and World Cup qualifier playoffs, leading to widespread dissatisfaction. Lookman’s experiences highlight the need for VAR to be consistently implemented in all major competitions to prevent such costly refereeing mistakes.
