The Washington Nationals selected Stephen Strasburg with the first overall pick in the 2009 Major League Baseball draft on June 9, 2009. Just 77 seconds before the deadline on August 17, 2009, he agreed to a four-year, $15.1 million contract with the Nationals, smashing the previous record of $10.5 million set by Mark Prior in 2001. On October 16, 2009, Strasburg started his first game as a professional, playing for the Phoenix Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
