Sporting CP could potentially complicate Liverpool’s pursuit of manager Ruben Amorim in an effort to secure a higher compensation fee from the Reds, according to insights from 90min.
Amorim has emerged as a prime candidate to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool, especially after Xabi Alonso publicly declared his intention to stay with Bayer Leverkusen beyond this season.
While Amorim’s contract with Sporting CP includes a release clause of €20m (£17.1m) for non-Portuguese clubs, there is reportedly a gentleman’s agreement that would allow him to depart for just €10m (£8.6m) if a ‘top European side’ makes an offer.

However, the definition of a ‘top European side’ may pose a challenge for Liverpool’s pursuit. Sporting CP insiders suggest it refers to clubs in a top-five league participating in the Champions League. Although Liverpool are likely to qualify for the competition next season, they are currently not classified as a Champions League team due to their Europa League participation this year.
In the event Liverpool initiates discussions with Sporting CP, the Portuguese club could argue that Liverpool does not meet their criteria for a ‘top European side,’ potentially seeking a fee closer to €15m for Amorim’s release. However, given the amicable relationship between Sporting CP and Liverpool, triggering the €20m clause may not be necessary.
While reports suggest Liverpool has yet to reach a formal agreement with Amorim regarding personal terms and no official interviews have been conducted, conversations with Amorim’s agents have taken place. Liverpool maintains that these discussions are part of their managerial selection process, which includes considering other candidates before making a final decision. Amorim himself has not finalized his decision on his future, but talks with Liverpool are expected to occur soon.
Liverpool aims to finalize the appointment of their next manager before the current season concludes, even if an official announcement may be deferred until the summer.
