Six Premier League players made the cut for the United States national team’s 26-man squad, indicating that they have been quietly building a team that might compete at the highest level at the World Cup in Qatar this winter.

The team’s most notable players include Christian Pulisic of Chelsea and Brenden Aaronson and Tyler Adams of Leeds United. While Matt Turner of Arsenal and Tim Ream and Antonee Robinson of Fulham make complete the Premier League delegation.

The quality among Americans is not limited to England; the squad includes Gio Reyna of Borussia Dortmund, Weston McKenna of Juventus, and Sergino Dest of AC Milan.

The team, and Ream in particular, who is joining the team for the first time in more than a year, has surprised many Americans.

“In Tim’s situation, you know, he was in the Premier League (two) years ago, and he struggled…he went to the Championship and he started playing better…now he’s in the Premier League, and he’s a top performer for his side,” USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter said.

“It’s quite challenging to ignore things like that. And based on what we’re witnessing and the caliber of his play, I believe Tim is unquestionably prepared to compete in a World Cup.”

Fulham’s Tim Ream has impressed in the Premier League this season However, perhaps the biggest shock is who isn’t included: Middlesbrough shot-stopper Zack Steffen.

Steffen served as Manchester City’s backup goalie, but most City supporters will remember him for his gaffe against Liverpool in the FA Cup last year.

The American left City in the summer in an effort to gain some playing time before the World Cup.
