Sir Jim Ratcliffe has stated that Manchester United will conduct a fresh evaluation of Mason Greenwood’s future, leaving the possibility open for him to play for the club again.
Greenwood, who faced charges of assault, attempted rape, and coercive control following his arrest in 2022, was believed to have played his final game for United after being loaned to Getafe towards the end of the last summer transfer window.
After an internal investigation by United, prompted by the Crown Prosecution Service dropping the case due to key witness withdrawals and new evidence, there were initial indications of Greenwood’s potential reintroduction. However, facing significant backlash, the club refrained from making a final decision.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, in his first external media engagement since his official buy-in, has not definitively stated that Greenwood, under contract until 2025 with an option until 2026, will don the United shirt again. Nonetheless, his comments affirm that the situation will be reevaluated, and a final decision will be made.
“We will make a decision and we will justify it,” Ratcliffe stated to assembled journalists. “He’s a Manchester United footballer, so we are in charge of football. So the answer is yes, we have to make decisions. It’s quite clear we have to make a decision. There is no decision that’s been made.
“He’s on loan, obviously, but he’s not the only one. We’ve got one or two footballers that we have to deal with, and we have to make a decision on, so we will do that.
“The process will be: understand the facts, not the hype, and then try to come to a fair decision based on values, which is basically, is he a good guy or not? And, could he play sincerely for Manchester United well, and would we be comfortable with it, and would the fans be comfortable with it?”
