According to Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the state’s local government poll would take place soon.
AbdulRazaq stated, “We are looking forward to holding the local government elections very shortly,” as he gave his assent to the Local Government Amendment Bill at the Government House in Ilorin.
AbdulRazaq praised the State House of Assembly for their legislative activities on the Local Government Elections Bill, noting that it now prepares the way for the holding of the elections, in a statement signed by Rafiu Ajakaye, the governor’s chief press secretary, late on Friday.

The state’s most recent local government election took place in October 2017.
The Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission, meantime, has said that it would begin organizing the state’s local government elections in February 2024.
In a statement, the commission’s chairman, Mr. Okanla Baba, stated that the commission was pleased with the Kwara State House of Assembly’s adoption of new revisions to the legislation governing the state’s local council election process.
“We are thrilled to learn that the legal revisions have been passed. The commission anticipates that the measure will be signed soon, but in February we will make an announcement about the local government election process.
The statement continued, “We implore all stakeholders to support this process.”
The state House of Assembly amended the state Electoral Commission Bill on Tuesday during its plenary session.
The Assembly instructed the Clerk of the House, Alhaji Olayiwola Ahmed, to read the Bill a third time before it was passed through third reading and final passage. This was done after the Assembly had reviewed the reports of the Joint Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Judiciary and the Committee on Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs at the Committee of Whole.
