The Football Association has levied misconduct charges against Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali for betting infractions.

The Italy international previously served a ten-month ban in October after admitting to placing bets on matches involving his former club AC Milan during his tenure with the Serie A side.

A statement released by the FA asserts, “Sandro Tonali has been charged with misconduct for alleged breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules. It is alleged that the Newcastle United midfielder violated FA Rule E8 on 50 occasions by placing bets on football matches between August 12, 2023, and October 12, 2023. Sandro Tonali has until April 5, 2024, to respond.”

In response, Newcastle United stated, “Newcastle United acknowledges the receipt of a misconduct charge against Sandro Tonali regarding alleged violations of FA Betting Rules. Sandro continues to fully cooperate with ongoing investigations and retains the club’s unwavering support. Due to the ongoing nature of this process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to provide further commentary at this time.”
