Sporting CP head coach Ruben Amorim has chosen not to comment on speculations linking him to the managerial position at Liverpool.

The Reds are currently in search of a successor for Jurgen Klopp, who revealed his decision to step down at the conclusion of the 2023/24 season. According to reports from 90min earlier this month, Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, a former Liverpool player and part of the 2005 Champions League-winning team, is the leading candidate to replace Klopp.

Amorim, part of a seven-man shortlist, is also being considered for the role. Despite long-standing speculations about his potential move to the Premier League due to his successful stint with Sporting in Portugal, Amorim remained tight-lipped about the Liverpool link. Prior to Sporting’s 3-3 draw against Rio Ave on Sunday, Amorim addressed the question, saying, “I’m not going to dwell on my future; I’ve already said what I had to say. Every time I talk about it, the topic comes up again. I just want to beat Rio Ave, and then we’ll see.”

In addition to Liverpool, Amorim has been associated with the soon-to-be-vacant managerial position at Barcelona following Xavi’s departure. Amorim achieved remarkable success with Sporting, ending their 19-year wait for a Portuguese title in 2021 and making them competitive in European competitions. They notably eliminated Arsenal from the Europa League’s last 16 stage last season before facing defeat against Juventus in the quarter-finals. Sporting also secured four points against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League group stage, finishing third.

Besides Amorim and Alonso, other managers reportedly on Liverpool’s radar include Roberto De Zerbi of Brighton & Hove Albion, Ange Postecoglou of Tottenham, Julian Nagelsmann of Germany, Unai Emery of Aston Villa, and Roger Schmidt of Benfica.
