Marseille’s new coach, Roberto De Zerbi, has praised Mason Greenwood as a world-class player amid negotiations for a transfer from Manchester United, as reported by Metro. Greenwood, currently on loan at Getafe, won’t return to Manchester United’s first team due to past issues that saw charges against him dropped in February 2023.

De Zerbi’s admiration for Greenwood comes as Marseille leads discussions for the 22-year-old striker, nearing a £27m deal. Despite fan protests and a #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign, Marseille remains eager to secure Greenwood, who has impressed during his loan stint at Getafe.

De Zerbi’s remarks reflect a paternal approach to player management, pledging to support and stand by Greenwood if he joins. “He is a champion, a player of international caliber,” De Zerbi said during his inaugural press conference as Marseille’s head coach.

“I’m not familiar with his past, I don’t know exactly what happened. I don’t like to intrude into players’ private lives. What I can say is that when a player signs for the club where I work, I treat him like my own child. I will protect him in every situation, and if necessary, I will counsel him privately while publicly defending him. My players are like my sons.”
