Chelsea and Manchester United have emerged as potential suitors for Real Madrid left-back Ferland Mendy, as per a report from Spain.
Mendy, who joined Madrid from Lyon in 2019, solidified his place in the starting lineup, displacing the legendary Marcelo. However, with Madrid eyeing a move for Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies, Mendy’s position at the Santiago Bernabeu is now uncertain.
As Mendy’s contract enters its final year this summer, questions loom over his future with Madrid. Mundo Deportivo suggests that both Chelsea and United are monitoring the situation, eyeing a potential summer move for the French defender.

Madrid’s pursuit of Davies has put Mendy in a backup role, prompting the club hierarchy to consider offloading him to recoup funds for Davies’ acquisition.
However, there’s internal division at Madrid, with manager Carlo Ancelotti advocating for Mendy’s retention. Ancelotti has lauded Mendy as the “best defensive full-back in the world” and is pushing for a contract extension for the 28-year-old.
Should Madrid make Mendy available for transfer, the report anticipates interest from both Chelsea and United, both of whom are seeking reinforcements at left-back.
Chelsea, despite starting the season with an abundance of left-backs, are looking to offload Lewis Hall, Ian Maatsen, and Marc Cucurella. This would leave Ben Chilwell as the sole senior left-back in the squad.
Similarly, United, managed by Erik ten Hag, have Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia as left-back options. However, both have struggled with injuries this season, potentially necessitating further depth in the position.
In addition to Chelsea and United, Bayern Munich could also join the race for Mendy if they lose Davies. Davies’ agent recently criticized Bayern’s attempts to rush his decision, suggesting that no quick resolution is forthcoming.
