“I genuinely believed I could help the team, so I pushed harder than I ever thought I could to give myself the best opportunity of going.

James, who has continued to thrive at the club level, looked poised to play a significant part for England. He was a member of Southgate’s Euro 2020 team and was expected to play as a right wing-back or in a back three.
