The World Cup this year, however, has set a new record for most goals scored, surpassing both the Brazil 2014 and France 1998 tournaments.

In comparison to the 171 goals scored in the France 1998 and Brazil 1994 tournaments, 172 goals were scored in Qatar 2022.

The tournament editions with the fewest goals scored in previous years were USA 1994 and South Africa 2010, with 141 and 143 goals scored in each iteration, respectively.
