Yoruba traditionalists have recently reached out to Gospel singer Tope Alabi, urging her to acknowledge their community.
The call comes in response to a video that circulated online, showing the singer using the traditional greeting language of ‘Aboru Aboye’ during her ministry in church.

Reacting to it, many social media users bash her for using such words in a church, while others queried her spirituality.

– If we must tell ourselves the real truth, then the word Aboru Aboye is for the traditionalist without sugarcoating it. The three major religions have a way of identifying themselves. The traditionalist uses, Aboru aboye oo while the responder replies with Aboye bo sise ooo. The same way the Muslims greet each other with, Salamalekun, and the responder replies with Amialekunsalam. Sorry to the Muslim community if I didn’t get it right. While Christians use Peace be unto you. I don’t know how or where she gets the inspiration from and I am not condemning her but those words she used truly belong to the traditionalist. Even the ebo is a term of sacrifice used by the traditionalist as well.
The slogan means greetings in Yoruba land of olden days & also the God interpretation in Yoruba is Olodumare meaning Odu the one that have different pedigrees which has absolutely nothing to do with cultist or fraternity of any kind. One of God’s name is ‘Alapadupe’ & to some it will sound taboo whereas in English bible He eulogize Him when He said ‘ I killeth and maketh alive blessed be my name ‘ 1 sam 2:6-9. God’s name & attributes are infinitum.

May l ask who was the 1st person in the bible to make sacrifice (ru ebo) to God. Cain ru ebo and his offerings 🔥 went straight unto God. Abraham ru ebo. Esau and his brother did. The only problem here is that you people have stopped translating in ijinle Yoruba. This is why l like Asake songs. He uses languages that we have abandoned and present them to us in a modern way and we love it. The meaning of the word matters, lets not forsake our language because of religion.

Why are people defending what they can’t. The greeting is limited to only the idol worshippers, most especially the Ogboni confraternity. Aboru Aboye; then the recipient will answer Aboye Bosise. If you’re still doubting this as a Yoruba person, please try to greet your parents by saying Aboru Aboye then come back to give me feedback.
