According to Solomon Arase, the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, the Special Police Constabulary must either be completely reorganized, dissolved, or given a uniform that is distinct from that of the regular police.
He claims that members of the Special Police Constabulary harm the reputation of the Nigeria Police Force by engaging in unethical activities like as extortion.
Arase adopted the stance in a statement released on Thursday by Ikechukwu Ani, the PSC spokeswoman.

The statement stated: “The Inspector General of Police and the Commission are already in communication regarding the necessity of restructuring the organization and functions of the unit. The group, a quasi-police organization established to support community policing, has been the subject of multiple allegations of unprofessional behavior by its members.
“There have been allegations of their impolite behavior ranging from blatant extortion on our streets and neighborhoods to haughty behavior while interacting with locals. The commission stipulates that the outfit’s officers must wear completely separate uniforms that distinguish them apart from regular police officers.
It stated that this will relieve the Nigeria Police Force of responsibility related to the misbehavior of men in the outfit by enabling proper tracking of the behavior of both regular police personnel and men in the outfit. In states where they are not paid and supported, the commission further demands that the group be dissolved.
According to the PSC, states should not establish security forces without providing funding for them.
The commission has noted that these guys have turned on defenseless Nigerians for their daily sustenance by intimidating and coercing them with force.
The committee will collaborate with the Nigeria Police Force’s leadership to sanitize the organization and operations of the force, according to its chairman, retired Inspector General of Police Dr. Solomon Arase. According to Dr. Arase, it is critical to distinguish special constabulary personnel from ordinary police officers and to specify all aspects of their operations, including dress codes and methods of interaction.
