Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has acknowledged that it was his “responsibility” that Cole Palmer opted to leave the club for Chelsea last summer. Despite Palmer’s 41 senior appearances for City over three years, the 21-year-old sought more regular playing time, prompting his decision to move on.
City secured a substantial £42.5 million fee for Palmer, who had limited first-team experience. At Chelsea, Palmer has thrived, contributing to a total of 21 goals and assists in 28 games and earning a place in the senior England squad.
Guardiola explained the circumstances leading to Palmer’s departure, stating, “If Palmer had the minutes I gave to Phil [Foden] from the beginning, Cole Palmer would be here – but I didn’t give them to him. That is my responsibility. Why? Because of Bernardo [Silva], Riyad [Mahrez], Phil. In that moment, I chose the other ones.”

The City manager acknowledged that such situations are normal for young players seeking more playing time. Guardiola expressed understanding, saying, “After one season it is nice, and the second season, but the third season it is, ‘Oh guys, I want to play, I don’t want to sit on the bench.’ It’s normal. We understand as a club.”
Despite Palmer’s initial struggle with the decision to leave City, the opportunity for more consistent minutes at Chelsea was too appealing to resist. Palmer expressed gratitude to the club and supporters, acknowledging that the move has allowed him to showcase his abilities and enjoy a new environment under Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.
