On December 29, 2022, Pele, who had battled colon cancer for a while, was declared dead. She was 82 years old.

Thousands of mourners gathered at Santos’ Estádio Urbano Caldeira Stadium to say their final goodbyes as his body was lay in state there for 24 hours.

Pele, also known as “The King,” will be buried at the Memorial Necropole Ecumenical, a high cemetery in Santos, on January 3, 2023.

He spent the first 18 years of his club career at Santos, where he was raised and won all of the available trophies, before moving to the New York Cosmos in his last years.

When Pele led Brazil to three World Cup victories and set the record as the only player to ever win three World Cup trophies, he received worldwide praise for his extraordinary performance.

Prior to Neymar’s goal against Croatia in the 2022 FIFA World Cup, he held the record for the most goals scored for Brazil with 77 goals in 92 games.
