The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has been urged by Adams Oshiomhole, a former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to prioritize workers’ rights advancement before partisan politics.

After meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima on Tuesday, Oshiomhole spoke to State House media about his long-standing support for labor unions because of his experience as a worker and union leader.

But he was concerned that the NLC’s recent strike actions appeared to be motivated more by politics than by a clear objective centered on the interests of workers.

He stated that since politics is about the people, labor cannot be apolitical. Furthermore, I maintained during my time in the NLC that no one, not even those who drive our industrial advancement, has the right to be politicized.

“Having said that, we also have to acknowledge that, no matter how hard you try, people will always support various politicians for different reasons when it comes to politics.

“You have to use caution so as not to appear to be supporting a specific political party or candidate. I didn’t get friends with any Edo State politicians while serving as President of the NLC.
