Mikel Obi, a former captain of the Super Eagles of Nigeria, has declared his retirement from the game of football.
Obi announced his retirement on his official social media account on Tuesday, September 27, 2022.

Obi decided it was time to hang up his boots after multiple victories for Nigeria and in club football.
Obi decided to quit at the age of 35 as a result of the social media backlash that sent him to the top of the trends.
The retirement of his Mikel
On his official social media accounts, Mikel expressed his gratitude to everyone who helped him pursue a great career.
He stated: “As they say, “all good things must come to an end,” and today is that day for my professional football career.
When I reflect on the previous 20 years of my profession, I have to admit that I am quite happy with what I was able to accomplish and, more significantly, the person it helped create.
“Without the continuous support of my family, managers, clubs, coaches, players, and, most importantly, my devoted fans, none of this would have been possible.
“Even on the days when I fell short of your expectations, you continued to encourage me through my highs and lows. I sincerely thank you.
I would also like to encourage anyone who I may have in some way inspired throughout my career to never give up on their dreams. Whenever you feel like giving up, just think back to why you started in the first place.
This is not a farewell; rather, it marks the beginning of a new trip and a new chapter in my life. I’m excited about what the future holds, and I’m hoping you’ll walk alongside me there. I’m grateful.
With a career marked by numerous titles at the club level and on the international arena, Mikel is recognized as one of the finest players to come out of Nigeria.
Mikel Appearance for Nigeria
Mikel represented Nigeria at all youth levels when he was a child. He competed in the 2003 FIFA U-17 World Cup as a member of the U-17 team.
When Nigeria’s Flying Eagles placed second to an Argentina team captained by Lionel Messi at the 2005 FIFA U-17 World Cup in the Netherlands, Mikel first gained international attention.
At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil, Mikel competed for the U-23 squad and won a bronze medal.
The Super Eagles won the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations thanks in large part to Mikel’s contributions while he was a member of the senior national squad (AFCON).
He also competed for teams that won bronze in the AFCON in 2006, 2010, and 2019.
