Zainab Ahmed, Nigeria’s Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, has indicated that the federal government intends to reduce the civil service.
The downsizing, she claims, is aimed at lowering the cost of the government’s annual recurrent expenditure.

Ahmed also revealed that a severance plan for affected employees is in the works.
The minister stated in a statement that the government has formed a committee to investigate agency failures based on the Stephen Oronsaye report.
According to Ahmed, the committee will be led by Boss Mustapha, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
“At the end of the day, we want to reduce the size of government as well as the size of personnel costs, and part of that will entail designing realistic exit packages.”
She went on to say that the proposed closure of agencies is due to “revenue challenges.”
