In the FIBA Women’s Olympic Qualifying event in Antwerp, Belgium, Nigeria’s Women’s Basketball team, D’Tigress, secured their first Group A victory by defeating Senegal 72-65 on Thursday.
Despite taking an initial lead of 20-18 in the first quarter, the Afrobasket champions found themselves trailing 37-46 to Senegal in the second quarter. Senegal maintained their lead at 57-49 by the end of the third quarter, leaving Nigeria with an uphill battle in the final 10 minutes.
However, showing resilience, Nigeria initiated an impressive 11-0 run at the start of the last quarter, turning the tide firmly in their favor. Amy Okonkwo played a pivotal role, leading Nigeria with an outstanding performance of 21 points and 10 rebounds. Okonkwo’s stellar display reflected her MVP status at the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket in 2023.

Despite the roller-coaster nature of the game, Nigeria clinched the victory. Their upcoming challenges include a match against the United States on Friday, followed by a face-off against Belgium on Sunday.
