Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta criticized Bayern Munich for deviating from their usual style of play in their Champions League victory over the Gunners on Wednesday night.
The tie was finely poised at 2-2 on aggregate following the first leg at the Emirates Stadium, with Bayern holding a slight advantage heading into the return leg at home.
However, the German giants were under pressure not to lose, having recently lost their stranglehold on the Bundesliga title to Bayer Leverkusen. Despite boasting some of Europe’s top attacking talent, they adopted a cautious approach, making it difficult for Arsenal to create chances. Joshua Kimmich’s goal in the 63rd minute proved decisive as Bayern edged through.

“Credit to the opponent, it’s very difficult to break down a team that plays in a manner they never usually do,” Arteta remarked. “We had our moments, especially in the first half. However, we struggled to maintain our rhythm and momentum in the second half, despite attempting different tactical adjustments.”
Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel acknowledged that his team didn’t perform at their best. “It was a tactical battle in the first half. We encouraged the team at halftime to show more courage and personality. We were more fluid and played a fantastic second half. We deserved the win,” Tuchel commented.
Bayern will now face Real Madrid in the semi-finals, with the prospect of a final against either Borussia Dortmund or Paris Saint-Germain looming if they progress.
As for Arsenal, their focus now shifts to ending a 20-year wait for the Premier League title. Currently sitting second in the table, they trail Manchester City by two points with six games remaining.
