Mikel Arteta has advised Aaron Ramsdale to exercise patience in his bid to reclaim the position of Arsenal’s primary goalkeeper and to resist contemplating a departure in the upcoming January transfer window.

Ramsdale found himself displaced by David Raya earlier in the season, leading to the England international making only two cup appearances since early September. He has been relegated to the sidelines in both Premier League and Champions League matches.

Notably, Chelsea is one of the clubs monitoring Ramsdale’s situation at Arsenal. Initially, the 25-year-old showed a willingness to dismiss the interest and focus on securing his future at the Emirates. However, if his struggle for playing time persists in the lead-up to Euro 2024 next summer, Ramsdale may be compelled to weigh his options.

Gareth Southgate, England’s manager, expressed on Friday that he couldn’t guarantee Ramsdale a spot in next summer’s squad if he continues to be on the periphery.

“There is a reality as a keeper, if we get to March and he’s six months without playing regularly, then I’m never going to promise things that I couldn’t guarantee delivering,” Southgate remarked.

In response to Southgate’s apprehension, Arteta cautioned Ramsdale against hastily considering a January departure from Arsenal and encouraged the goalkeeper to continue fighting for his place.

“I want to emphasize that my door is always open for discussions about any player,” he expressed. “Our primary goal is to ensure the well-being of our players, understanding the impact we can have on them, whether positively or otherwise.

“We are committed to doing our utmost to assist them. However, it’s crucial to recognize that football is a team sport that requires a squad of 24 players, each fulfilling a specific role. The role a player has in August may significantly differ from that in March.

“Making premature decisions, in my experience, is not advisable. The team’s evolving needs must be met, and achieving that requires the collective effort of all players. Aaron plays a vital role in our team.

“I have no specific messages for any clubs showing interest in Aaron Ramsdale. I can express my appreciation for my players, including Aaron, and convey our desire to have him with us, which is unquestionable.”
