Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino has attributed his side’s lack of intensity without possession as the decisive factor in their 2-2 draw with 10-man Burnley on Saturday.
Despite Cole Palmer twice giving the Blues the lead at Stamford Bridge following Lorenz Assignon’s dismissal, the hosts were unable to hold on as goals from Josh Cullen and Dara O’Shea saw them settle for a point.
With Chelsea recording 33 shots, including 13 on target, and amassing 4.26 expected goals (xG), Pochettino expressed disappointment in their inability to capitalize on their dominance.

“I’m very disappointed with the way we managed the situation in the second half,” Pochettino lamented in his post-match press conference. “While we excel in possession and forward play, creating numerous chances, we need to improve our conversion rate.
“After today’s performance, we lacked the necessary energy, determination, and defensive solidity required to compete in the Premier League. We conceded too much defensively, and that’s why I’m so upset and disappointed.
“It’s more about mental and emotional strength than physical ability to perform collectively as a team. This aspect has been slow to evolve for various reasons, which was evident today.
“There are no excuses. While we displayed attacking prowess and energy, we lacked the same intensity without the ball. We must address this deficiency and refocus ahead of our upcoming match against Manchester United on Thursday.”
